Mr. Rahman was born into a prominent Muslim family in Gopalganj, Tungipara in 1954. During the turbulent sixties when the movement of an independent Bangladesh was gaining momentum under the charismatic leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mr. Sheikh Hafizur Rahman was involved in student politics and underground activities. After 1975 when Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family were brutally assassinated Mr. Rahman helped in shaping the anti dictatorial movement by actively involving himself in journalistic and organizational activities that were banned in the country at the time through decree.
In 1978, he started his career in business first by involving himself in commodity trading and expanding by building and operating an inland water vessel carrying cargo across the country. This became the foundation for what is today SHR Group, a leading transportation and agency house in the country, Mr. Rahman is the chairman of this group. His excellent reputation and humility saw him elected as the Chairman of Bangladesh Container Shipping Association (BCSA), a trade association of all Main Line Operators (MLO) and their agents in the country. Mr. Rahman has been elected chairman five times consecutively and still holds the chair. He is a member of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI), Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association (BSAA), Bangladesh Cargo Vessels Owners Association (BCVOA) and Bangladesh Petroleum Tanker Owners Association (BPTOA).
Mr. Rahman is proud in being instrumental in the founding of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Trust, a social services organization in memory of the founding Father of Bangladesh. The trust is headed by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and provides scholarships and healthcare services to lower income areas, promotes research and publication on Bangladeshi political history. Mr. Rahman serves as its Member Secretary. Mr. Rahman is also a life member of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society.
It is worth noting Mr. Rahman is a leading poet and historian of Bangladesh. His numerous publications of poetry has earned him recognition both at home and abroad most notably; Michael Madhushudhon Dutta Award (Kolkata, India), and translation of his book of poetry in German by The Heidelberg University. His works on history has earned him the prestigious Fellowship of The Bangla Academy, Bangladesh.
He received his undergraduate degree from The Dhaka University and postgraduate degree from a private University.
